Democratic State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski forms PAC focused on protecting abortion rights

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski announced the creation of a PAC dedicated to mobilizing voters who support abortion rights.

Godlewski, who dropped out of the U.S. Senate race in July, said the Women Win Wisconsin PAC will have two purposes. One will be to oppose U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh. The other will be to back six women running for the state Legislature as part of an effort to protect Dem Gov. Tony Evers’ veto if he’s reelected.

Republicans went into this session with a 21-12 majority in the state Senate and a 61-38 majority in the Assembly. They’d need to net one seat in the Senate and five in the Assembly to reach two-thirds majorities that would allow them to override a gubernatorial veto without Dem support.

“We are building on the power of pro-choice women to restore reproductive freedom,” Godlewski said in the announcement.

The legislative effort includes four races in the Assembly and two in the Senate. The Dem Assembly candidates the PAC will support are: state Reps. Katrina Shankland, of Stevens Point, and Lee Snodgrass, of Appleton; Oshkosh Mayor Lori Palmieri in the open 54th AD; and activist Luann Bird in the Milwaukee suburbs’ open 84th AD. In the Senate, the PAC is supporting Dem candidates Kristin Alfheim, a small business owner, in the Appleton area’s open 19th SD and Kelly Westlund, who has spent the last seven years as an aide to U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, in northern Wisconsin’s open 25th SD.
